A Study in Scarlet is the very first Holmes novel published,
in 1887, where we learn of how Holmes and Watson first meet, and follow them as they
solve a murder whose roots stretch back to America. The Sign of the Four is the
second Holmes novel (1890) and involves the case of a young lady who has been
receiving pearls in the mail after her father's disappearance. She comes to Holmes
after the arrival of an enigmatic letter.
